What this problem is
A parking or red-light camera ticket usually gives you a short window to pay, contest it in writing, or ask for a hearing. The rules are set by the state and, for parking, often by the city or county that wrote the ticket.
Your rights in plain language
The ticket tells you what to do
Florida
A county or city parking ticket is a noncriminal violation. Follow the directions on the ticket: if you don't pay or respond within the time it states, the court notifies the registered owner by mail.

You can ask for a hearing
Florida
You can choose to present evidence to a designated official instead of paying. If you do, you give up the option of simply paying the ticket's civil penalty; after the hearing the official decides whether a violation happened and may set a penalty of up to $100 (or the county's fine) plus court costs.

When the owner isn't responsible
Florida
The owner isn't responsible if the vehicle was stolen, or was being used without permission, at the time of the ticket. If someone else had the vehicle, the owner can name them in an affidavit.

The official process
Read the ticket carefully
Find the date, the ticket number, the amount, and the deadline and ways to pay or contest it.
Gather evidence
Take photos of signs and markings, and keep receipts, permits or payment app records.
Contest in writing or ask for a hearing
Use the method on the ticket before the deadline. Explain clearly why the ticket is wrong and include your evidence.
Keep proof and watch for a decision
Keep copies and confirmations. If you lose, the decision explains any further appeal and the time limit for it.
Common mistakes
- Missing the deadline printed on the ticket.
- Ignoring the ticket: unanswered tickets usually cost more.
- Sending an appeal without evidence, or without the ticket number.
- Not keeping a copy or proof of when you sent it.

It depends on the place and the route you choose. In Florida, for example, choosing a hearing for a county or city parking ticket means the official sets the penalty. Check the rule for your state on this page before you decide.
