What we are and aren't

What we are

  • A legal information service. We explain rules, deadlines and options in plain English and Spanish, with links to official sources.
  • A document preparation tool. We help you prepare your own letters, appeals and requests from your answers.
  • A signpost. Every guide shows where to get help from a person, including free and low-cost services.

What we aren’t

  • We are not a law firm. We don’t employ lawyers to act for you, and using this service does not create a lawyer–client relationship.
  • We don’t give legal advice. We give general legal information and help you prepare documents. We don’t tell you which option to choose.
  • We don’t represent you. We never contact courts, landlords, companies or agencies on your behalf. You are the author of your documents and you send them yourself.
  • We don’t promise outcomes. Nobody can promise how a court, agency or company will decide.
  • We don’t help with immigration applications. For visas and immigration we give official information and links to regulated advisers only.

When to talk to a person

Talk to a person if you have received court papers, if a deadline is very close, if a lot of money is involved, or if you feel unsafe. See Get help from a person.
